Sheltering Homeless Youth

The Door Youth Shelter

The Door is a 24-7 shelter for homeless youth aged 12-18, located at 138 10th Avenue in Fairbanks. The shelter provides a safe place to sleep, home cooked meals, clothing, supplies, and connections to community resources to help youth find stability. We are licensed by the State of Alaska and can house up to 12 kids.

The journey of FYA and specifically The Door is largely a product of the generous Fairbanks community. Since our beginning, volunteers have served alongside paid staff to maintain the shelter programs, and donations from the community help us provide for the kids' immediate needs.

We wouldn't be able to do this without you!

Why we Help

Fairbanks Youth Advocates believes that providing assistance at critical times in the lives of young people is vital to their present and future well being, ultimately contributing to the stability and long-term health of our community. We seek to facilitate at-risk youth during life transitions. Foundational in this effort is ensuring young kids have a safe place to stay when they find themselves without a home.

Our services are available for ALL youth aged 12-18 youth regardless of race, color, creed, national origin, gender, disability, religion, or sexual orientation. We respect and honor the human dignity of all people. Under no circumstances is it required or expected that an individual believes a certain way to access or receive services.

We accept all as they are, however, they are.

Adam's Story

“I came to The Door not knowing what to do. I was 14 and had never been out of my homeIt was a big change in my life. As I held onto The Door, they kept holding onto me….I had never had that before - trust. The trust and friendship I made with staff helped me through family difficulties. Over time, the Door ended up feeling like home. Then when I was 17, The Door helped me by encouraging me to go the Job Center, to seek help finding a job. I learned life skills and employment skills - The Door helped me with finishing school. I went to the Alaska Military Academy - I could not have done that without The Door. When I came back from the academy, I had my GED and I didn't know what to do. I thought I was done - that I couldn’t do anything else. The Door really helped me with getting a job and the staff helped me to feel confident and know that I can get a job and I can go to school. I’m working on my CNA, going to CTC in the fall....it's nice to have people around me who believe in me......I feel secure now and part of that is because of The Door - because they believed in me I can believe in myself!”

Jen's Story

Jen used to stay at The Door and stopped by this last week for a pair of black pants. Now 18, she lives in a dry cabin but visits us a few times a week to wash clothes, pick up a little food, and touch base with staff. She needed those black pants for a recent employment opportunity at a local food establishment. I asked her if she had a moment to tell me what role we played in her life?...how, if at all, did we make a difference? “I came to The Door not knowing what to do. I was 14 and had never been out of my home. It was a big change in my life. As I held onto The Door, they kept holding onto me….I had never had that before—trust. The trust and friendship I made with staff helped me through family difficulties. Over time, the Door ended up feeling like home.
