Greetings,
The Urgency:
Hardly a week goes by that Fairbanks Youth Advocates doesn’t receive a call from a local youth agency or family seeking shelter for a youth. The need for safe shelter is not going away – even during this season of the Midnight Sun. The good news is we are making progress in our steps towards opening The Door, an emergency shelter designed specifically for youth, staffed with caring adults who can provide support to kids and their families through this roller coaster experience we call adolescence.
What’s New, in no particular order:
- The city has accepted the
award of the Community Development Block Grant for the renovation of the The Door, Fairbanks Youth Advocates’ shelter. - We have received un-official
notice of 2 other grant awards for operations, - We have 3 new awesome board
members, - We received the 2012
Altruistic award from Alaska Alpha Delta Kappa! - The community has been
generous with recent donations of appliances: washers and dryers, - Middle School students from
Randy Smith made polar fleece blankets for use at The Door, - The Bramer kids donated all
proceeds from their Lemonade stand from National Lemonade Day, - We have a second AmeriCorps
Vista who has joined us for the summer. (Watch for Fairbanks Youth Advocates at the summer markets as we get the word out about the need for shelter . . . follow your nose to the Rosette booth) - We designed, with the help
of many, our first brochure. It’s spiffy! - We have finally settled in
on a logo! Whaahoo! See a variation at the top.

I am learning that it is far easier to say ‘love mercy, act justly, and walk humbly with your God’ (Micah 6:8) than to do it. But, we put one foot in front of the other, and we say to our self, ‘Soul, do not grow weary of
doing good!’
Bless you,
Marylee
